Scars can be caused by acne, surgery and other forms of skin trauma, the term scarring refers to a fibrous process in which new collagen is laid down to heal a full-thickness injury.  Scarscan be atrophic (indented), hypertrophic (raised), keloid (raised, red, and larger than the original injury),pigmented or a combination of these characteristics.

The Victorian Dermal Group offers a variety of lasers and treatment options for scarring, the type of laser and method will depend on the characteristics of the scar and your skin type. Our scarring options include; Active skincare, Fractionated lasers, Fractionated radiofrequency, Chemical peels and skin needling.

Active skincare

Skincare is a vital part of any skin treatment process, active ingredients at high concentrations can assist with the treatment of scars by aiding in collagen and elastin production and resurface skin layers promoting a smoother texture. We recommend you prepare your skin 4 weeks prior to your treatments.

Fractionated Lasers

The fractionated laser has two wavelengths (1927nm and the 1550nm). The 1927nm wavelength targets superficial skin layers achieving accelerated clearance of post-inflammatory pigmentation. The 1550nm wavelength is used for deeper rejuvenation such as treating wrinkles, scar remodelling & for acne scarring. Post-operative scars and older scars can alsobe reduced with this wavelength.

Fractionated lasers provide many of the benefits of invasive ablative lasers (such as CO2 & erbium lasers), with very little down-time and fewer side effects. The Laser delivers fine pin points of laser beams into the skin, which induces cell renewal.  Fractionated Laser stimulates the body’s own natural healing process to bring fresh, glowing, and healthy skin in as little as 7 days.

How Many Fractionated Treatments will I need?

Your skin is unique- your genetic makeup, life style and personal history all contribute to how your skin looks and feels now and in the future. Many notice a result in as little as one treatment, but a series of 3 is recommended (4 -6 weeks apart).

The cumulative effects from a Fractionated treatment are permanent, which is why so many people seek this treatment for anti-aging and scarring.

Does the Fractionated Laser treatment hurt?

Our team of qualified Dermal clinicians will apply a topical anaesthetic cream, which is left on for 45mins. Discomfort may be felt, that is like a hot prickling sensation. A cooling device is used to cool the area. This significantly reduces sensation felt during the treatment.

What can I expect after the Fractionated Laser treatment?

Redness and some degree of swelling can occur for 24-48 hours. Your skin will have a “bronze” appearance for 4-7 days on the face.

Chemical peels

Our Dermamelan/Cosmelan pigmentation treatments in Melbourne are highly potent, treating post-inflammatory pigmentation, dark areas and brown spots with safety and effectively. Dermamelan/Cosmelan is for patients with enduring or hard to treat problems.

Dermamelan/Cosmelan Depigmentation treatments are based on the prevention, diminution and fusion of melanin spots on the face (melasma and chloasma). A high level of active ingredients in the mask and the home care products, avert the evolution of melanin production. Retinoic acid expedites cell turnover, which forces present pigment cells to the surface where they are then shed.

At the Victorian Dermal Group we provide professional, topical Cosmelan pigmentation treatments for Melbourne customers. Targeting all types of brown patches and skin discolourations our treatment significantly reduces the blemishes caused by increased Melanin production by gently fading the pigment and preventing further pigment from resurfacing.

Skin needling

Medik8 Collagen Induction Therapy-Medical Grade Depth Collagen Induction Therapy (also known as skin needling) is a safe and increasingly popular skin renewal technique used to treat scars.

Visible signs of skin rejuvenation and an improvement o the scars are usually seen just after 6 weeks following the treatment and continue to improve for up to a year or more, we recommend a minimum course of three skin needling treatments, at six week intervals to achieve optimum results.

Skin needling procedures are comparable to ablative laser techniques but are much less invasive, resulting in minimal downtime.

Skin needling is also one of the few skin therapies that are suitable for all skin types including ethnic skin and fragile skin around the eyes, mouth, hands, neck and décolletage.
