Microneedling is a clinical cosmetic treatment that uses very, very fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. The tiny punctures activate your body’s natural healing process to encourage collagen and elastin production.
While the treatment itself is relatively quick, the way you take care of your skin after your microneedling treatment plays a significant role in recovery.
Proper post-treatment care helps support healing and reduces the likelihood of side effects such as irritation, prolonged redness, or pigmentary changes.
The following aftercare information is provided as general guidance only. Your clinician may give you personalised instructions based on your skin type, the depth of treatment, and your individual needs. Always follow the advice given to you during your appointment.
What you can expect after microneedling
Immediately after treatment (0-24 hours): Your skin may look flushed and feel warmer, similar to a moderate sunburn. This is a common response after treatment and reflects the skin’s short-term healing process. You may also notice some minor swelling, especially around the eyes, and your skin might feel tight or sensitive to touch.
Days 2-3: The redness should start to fade, but your skin may feel dry and begin to flake or peel lightly. This is your skin naturally shedding damaged cells. Resist the urge to pick or scratch. Some people experience minor breakouts as impurities are pushed to the surface.
Days 4-7: Visible side effects often ease during this time, though the recovery period can differ from person to person. Your skin may still feel slightly sensitive, but most of the redness and swelling should have significantly reduced. Some people notice changes in skin texture or brightness as their skin settles, although responses vary.
The following weeks: Between weeks 2–4, many people begin to see their skin settle and gradually change in appearance, but the timing and degree of change are different for everyone. The micro-injuries from treatment encourage new collagen and elastin production, which can build for several months.
Remember: Everyone heals differently. Factors like your age, skin type, treatment depth, and how well you follow aftercare guidance all affect your timeline and results.

Dos and don’ts after microneedling
Here are some microneedling aftercare guidelines to help you care for your skin in the days following your treatment.
Don’t expose your skin to direct sunlight
After your microneedling treatment, it is crucial to keep your skin out of the sun as much as possible. Your skin is vulnerable to burning and pigmentary changes while it’s healing.
Apply sunscreen with an SPF 50 to your face every day, even when it’s cloudy outside. Reapply sunscreen often to protect the skin barrier from sun exposure while it heals.
Don’t wear makeup for 24 hours
To support the healing process, don’t wear makeup for at least 24 hours following your microneedling treatment. When you do resume makeup application, ensure your brushes and sponges are thoroughly cleaned to prevent irritation.
Don’t pick at the skin
It can be tempting, but try not to touch, scratch, or pick at your skin while it’s healing. Disturbing the area can interrupt the natural recovery process and increase the chance of irritation. Light flaking or peeling is a common part of post-treatment renewal, as older surface cells lift away.
Don’t use saunas, steam rooms or other heat treatments
Saunas, steam rooms, or other heat-based environments should be avoided for about 48 hours after microneedling. Heat can increase circulation and sweating, which may lead to additional redness or irritation during the skin’s early healing phase.
Don’t exercise intensely
Intense exercise can generate heat and sweat that may irritate recently treated skin. For the first 24–48 hours after microneedling, avoid activities that cause heavy sweating, opting for gentle movement, such as walking or other low-impact exercise.
Do keep your skin clean with a gentle cleanser
Microneedling temporarily leaves the skin more sensitive, and strong or fragranced products may increase the chance of discomfort. Opting for a fragrance-free, alcohol-free, non-comedogenic cleanser can help minimise unnecessary irritation.
When washing your face, apply the product lightly and rinse with cool or lukewarm water. Gently pat the skin dry with a clean cloth, being careful not to rub it.
Do hydrate with a light, oil-free moisturiser
If you choose to apply a moisturiser, a light, oil-free option is generally recommended in the first few days, as richer or highly active formulas may feel too stimulating on post-treatment skin. Apply small amounts as needed to reduce dryness or tightness while your skin recovers.
Don’t use retinol or other actives
AHAs, BHAs, or retinol after microneedling can be too stimulating for recently treated skin. Because microneedling temporarily creates micro-channels in the skin and increases sensitivity, applying exfoliants or vitamin A during this period may lead to irritation.
It’s generally best to pause these ingredients until the skin has settled. Once any visible redness or sensitivity has subsided, they can usually be reintroduced gradually, depending on how your skin responds. If you’re unsure when to start using retinol after microneedling, your clinician can guide you based on your treatment depth and skin tolerance.
Don’t drink alcohol
Alcohol can contribute to dehydration, which may make the skin feel more sensitive after microneedling. Avoiding it for the first 24 hours can support the skin’s recovery.
Do follow up with your dermal clinician
To ensure optimal management and care, it is important to follow up with your dermal clinician for a post-treatment consultation 4-6 weeks following treatment.

Microneedling aftercare: FAQs
What is involved in a microneedling treatment?
A microneedling treatment involves using a small, handheld device to create thousands of tiny micro-channels in the skin. This stimulates the body’s natural healing response. This process can lead to changes in the skin’s texture and appearance over time, although results vary between individuals.
How often should I have a microneedling treatment?
The frequency of microneedling treatments will all depend on your skin’s individual goals and needs. Typically, microneedling treatments are spaced 4-6 weeks apart, which allows the skin to heal fully in between treatments. For a deeper dive, read our recent article: How often should skin needling be done?
What can I expect after my treatment?
After a microneedling treatment, the skin may appear pink to red and flushed. It is also common to experience some mild redness, swelling and potential bruising. These side effects typically resolve within 4-7 days, although some sensitivity may persist during this recovery period.
What are the best post-microneedling treatment skin care products to use?
Yes, using gentle, fragrance-free, non-comedogenic products for 24 hours after your microneedling treatment is important. A light, oil-free moisturiser is also recommended to keep the skin hydrated.
For best practice, your dermatologist can recommend specific products for you.
How long will it take to see the results of microneedling?
Everyone heals differently, but results can typically be seen as early as 1-2 weeks after treatment, with optimal results usually achieved 4-6 weeks post-treatment.
Are there any risks or side effects associated with microneedling?
The most common side effects are mild irritation, which can lead to pinkness, redness, swelling and bruising, which typically resolve within 4-7 days.
How long after microneedling can I exercise?
You should always avoid intense exercise for 24 hours following your microneedling treatment. Mild exercise is fine, but anything that will cause you to sweat excessively should be completely avoided, as this can irritate the skin.
Is it normal for the skin to peel after a needling treatment?
Peeling can occur as the skin naturally sheds surface cells during the early repair phase. This is a normal part of the adjustment period for many people. This represents your skin’s natural process of eliminating damaged cells.
I’ve started breaking out after my microneedling treatment. Is this normal?
Some clients may develop temporary blemishes following microneedling, usually occurring around the second to third day post-treatment. This happens when impurities from deeper skin layers are brought to the surface during the healing response. Some people experience temporary breakouts as the skin settles. These usually improve as the skin recovers, but the timing varies.
