PERSONALISED CARE

REGENERATIVE SKIN SUPPORT
WITH SKINPEN MICRONEEDLING

WHAT IS SKINPEN?

SkinPen is a TGA-listed mechanical microneedling device designed to create precise micro-injuries in the skin at controlled depths. This process stimulates the body’s natural wound-healing response, supporting the production of collagen and elastin. As the treatment does not rely on heat, ablative energy, or chemicals, SkinPen is commonly used to help improve overall skin structure and surface appearance.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

SkinPen uses a sterile, single-use cartridge of ultra-fine needles that move in a rapid, automated stamping motion. This design ensures uniform application and consistent depth across the treatment area. The needle depth can be adjusted from the skin’s surface layers for texture refinement to deeper levels for structural support. This allows your dermal clinician to tailor the treatment according to your skin thickness, sensitivity, and individual treatment plan.

WHO IS IT FOR?

SkinPen is frequently incorporated into personalised skin plans to help improve the appearance of post-acne or surgical scarring, fine lines, enlarged pores, and overall skin texture. It is suitable for a range of skin tones and can be adapted for different areas of the face and body through adjustable needle depths.

Microneedling may not be recommended for sensitive, inflamed, or irritated skin. Your clinician will assess your medical history and current skin condition to determine whether SkinPen is an appropriate treatment for you.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR SKINPEN TREATMENT

A consultation sets the foundation for your SkinPen microneedling treatment, ensuring depth settings, treatment areas, and session timing are customised to suit your skin. Your clinician will outline a personalised plan before you get started.

During your treatment session

Timelines are a general guide and may vary based on your skin response and treatment plan.

  • Each session is around 60 minutes, depending on the treatment area.
  • A clinician will prepare the skin, potentially applying a numbing cream.
  • You may feel a mild scratching sensation as the needles pass over the skin.
  • Temporary redness or tightness can follow and typically settle within a day or two.
  • A soothing mask or serum is applied immediately after your treatment, and potentially LED light therapy.

Preparing for your treatment

Preparation guidance may differ based on your skin and medical history.

  • Pause active skincare (retinoids, AHAs/BHAs) for 3 days beforehand.
  • Avoid all incidental sun exposure before treatment as best as you can.
  • Avoid waxing, tanning, or heat-based treatments before your appointment.
  • Arrive with clean skin, free from makeup, sunscreen, and self-tanning products.
  • Inform your clinician about any recent cosmetic procedures, medication changes, or medical conditions.

After your treatment

  • Avoid direct sun exposure for around 5 days and apply SPF 50+ daily.
  • Hydrate the skin with gentle, non-active moisturisers.
  • Avoid direct heat, steam rooms, and intense exercise for 48 hours.
  • Mild flaking or dryness may occur. Avoid exfoliating or picking.
  • Makeup can usually be applied the next day once redness has settled.
The patient is provided with an after-care kit from Victorian Dermal Group to support their post-treatment routine.

YOUR FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Here, our dermal clinicians have answered some of your most commonly asked questions about SkinPen microneedling. For personalised guidance, you’re always welcome to contact the clinic.

SkinPen is a form of microneedling, but it’s a specific TGA-approved device designed for use in clinical settings. Like other microneedling approaches, it creates controlled micro-channels in the skin. However, it features adjustable depth settings and single-use sterile needle cartridges. Treatments are performed by trained dermal clinicians, who tailor the depth and approach to suit your skin and timing.

Vivace and SkinPen both use microneedling to create controlled micro-channels in the skin, but they operate differently.

SkinPen is a mechanical microneedling device that relies solely on precise needle depth to stimulate the skin’s natural repair process. Vivace combines microneedling with radio-frequency energy, which introduces heat into deeper layers of the skin.

Your clinician will help determine which approach aligns best with your skin type, treatment history, and long-term plan.

SkinPen treatments are typically spaced several weeks apart to allow the skin to complete its natural repair cycle between sessions. Many people choose a series of appointments, then move to occasional maintenance depending on their plan and how their skin responds. Your clinician will recommend a schedule that aligns with your goals and skin tolerance.

Pricing depends on the area being treated, the number of sessions recommended, and whether SkinPen is included in a broader skincare plan. You’ll receive a personalised quote during your consultation, along with a treatment schedule tailored to your skin and treatment goals.

SkinPen works by stimulating the skin’s natural repair and regeneration processes. The device creates controlled micro-injuries that trigger the body’s natural repair response, encouraging the production of collagen and elastin, proteins that help support the skin’s structure and resilience.

Improvements typically develop gradually over a series of treatments as new collagen forms beneath the surface. Many people notice a smoother texture and a more refined surface appearance over time. As individual skin responses vary, your clinician will discuss what outcomes are realistic for your skin type, goals, and treatment plan.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

All cosmetic treatments involve potential risks, side effects, and downtime. Everyone’s skin responds differently, so results vary and are not guaranteed. A clinical consultation is required to assess suitability and discuss expected outcomes, after-care, and alternative options.
