Top Ten Aftercare Tips for Skin Needling Treatments

Let's ensure you get the very best results.

It may seem a relatively new beauty innovation; however, skin needling has been in use since the mid-90s. Fast forward to today where the popular therapy continues to knock the skin care industry off its feet with its dramatic results, wide applications, low risks and short downtime.

So what's the secret to getting the most from your skin needling treatment? Post-care.

Follow these simple skin needling aftercare instructions from Victorian Dermal Group to ensure optimal results from your treatment.

Micro-needling Post-Care Instructions

Tip 1. Avoid Sun Exposure

After your skin needling treatment, it is important to keep your skin out of the sun. The skin will be more sensitive following the treatment and can burn easily.

It is important to apply sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher every day, even when it's cloudy outside. Reapply sunscreen often, especially after swimming or sweating to protect the skin barrier from sun exposure while it heals.

Tip 2. Avoid Makeup for 24 hours

To support the healing process, it is important to avoid makeup for at least 24 hours following the skin needling procedure. If you must wear makeup, make sure to use non-comedogenic and oil-free products.

Tip 3. Avoid Hot Showers or Baths

Hot water can strip the skin of its natural oils and disrupt the micro-environment working to heal the skin. It is best to avoid hot showers or baths for 24 hours following your treatment.

Tip 4. Avoid Touching or Picking at the Skin

It is important to avoid touching or picking at the skin as this can disrupt the wound healing response and lead to infection. Peeling skin is a common side effect of collagen induction therapy due to the dead skin cells being stimulated upwards.

Tip 5. Avoid Saunas, Steam Rooms or Other Heat Treatments

Saunas, steam rooms or other heat treatments should be avoided for 24 hours following your microneedling procedure as they can irritate the skin.

Tip 6. Use a Gentle Cleanser

A gentle cleanser should be used for 24 hours following the treatment to avoid irritation. A fragrance-free, alcohol-free, and non-comedogenic cleanser is best.

Tip 7. Use a Light, Oil-Free Moisturiser

It is important to keep the skin hydrated following a skin needling procedure. A light, oil-free moisturiser should be applied, as needed, to avoid dryness and irritation and to encourage skin rejuvenation.

Tip 8. Avoid Intense Exercise

Intense exercise should be avoided for 24 hours following the treatment as it can cause sweating and irritation.

Tip 9. Avoid Alcohol

Alcohol should be avoided for 24 hours following the treatment as it can cause dehydration and irritation.

Tip 10. Follow Up With Your Dermatologist

What is skin needling used to treat?

Skin needling is a versatile treatment that can be used to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, stretch marks and more. Used to refine and rejuvenate the skin, fine needles stimulate collagen production as part of the skin’s natural healing process.

Skin needling is a popular and highly-effective collagen induction therapy that is also referred to as micro-needling due to the fine needles used in the process.

What is involved in a skin needling treatment?

A skin needling treatment involves using a small, handheld device to create thousands of tiny punctures in the skin. This stimulates the body’s natural healing response, resulting in the production of collagen and elastin. The new collagen production results in smoother, youthful, glowing skin.

Skin needling treatments are usually performed as a series of 4-6 treatments, spaced 4-6 weeks apart.

How often should I have a skin needling treatment?

The frequency of skin needling treatments will depend on your individual goals and needs. Typically, treatments are spaced 4-6 weeks apart to allow the skin to heal fully in between treatments.

What can I expect after my treatment?

After a skin needling treatment, the skin may appear pink and flushed. It is also common to experience some mild redness, swelling and bruising. These side effects typically resolve within 24-48 hours.

H3 Do I need specific skin needling aftercare products?

Yes, using gentle, fragrance-free, non-comedogenic products for 24 hours after your skin needling treatment is important. A light, oil-free moisturiser is also recommended to keep the skin hydrated.

If required, your dermatologist can recommend specific products for you.

How long will it take to see results?

Results from skin needling treatments can be seen as early as 1-2 weeks after, with optimal results typically seen 4-6 weeks post-treatment.

Are there any risks or side effects associated with skin needling?

Skin needling is a safe and effective treatment with minimal risks and side effects. The most common side effects are mild irritation which can lead to redness, swelling and bruising, which typically resolve within 24-48 hours.

How long after skin needling can I exercise?

You should avoid intense exercise for 24 hours following your skin needling treatment. Mild exercise is fine, but anything that will cause you to sweat excessively should be avoided as this can irritate the skin.

Is it normal for the skin to peel after a needling treatment?

It is not uncommon for the skin to peel after a skin needling treatment. This is typically a sign that the treatment successfully stimulated collagen production and promoted cell turnover. Peeling usually starts 3-5 days after the treatment and can last up to 7 days.

I've started breaking out after my skin needling treatment. Is this normal?

Some people may experience breakouts after a skin needling treatment. This is typically due to the release of debris and toxins from the deep layers of the skin. Breakouts usually resolve within 1-2 weeks.
