How we can treat your pigmentation

You'll need to visit our clinic for an initial consultation. During this 15-30 minute session, we'll discuss your medical history, as well as any lifestyle factors which may contribute to your skin's condition.

From there, we'll formulate a unique treatment plan, tailored specifically for your skin's health. We may suggest one of our chemical peels, if the pigmentation is superficial. If it's penetrated more layers of your skin, we'll recommend one of our laser therapies.

At the end of the session, we'll give you a pack to take home. You can book a session while you're at the clinic, or you can take your time and think about what you think you'll work best. After all, you know your skin, and we know the science of skin.

How it works

When you should seek treatment for pigmentation

If your skin pigmentation is pronounced, and causes you distress when you look in the mirror, you ought to seek treatment. In all cases, when you receive skin solutions for this condition, you'll notice other benefits — like a bright, even-toned complexion, free of blemishes.

Many of our clients complain that their family and friends can't understand why they hate their freckles (a form of pigmentation). At Victorian Dermal Group, we don't judge. We understand everyone has their own relationship with their skin, and if removing your freckles or other pigmentation makes you happier, then let's do it.

Who it's for

The technology

We use lasers and products which are results-driven. We've researched the top-end technologies for aesthetic medicine procedures. And these are the best skin care solutions for pigmentation.

Cosmelan or Dermamelan treatment

The first is a cosmetic strength solution, while the second is a medical-grade strength. Both solutions are made with the same chemical compound, and have similar reactions.

We use these treatments to remedy dark, or severe, pigmentation in our clients. It's often used to get rid of a large number of freckles, as well as melasma.

Vbeam Prima

The laser delivers an intense, highly targeted beam of light into the affected area. There, it's absorbed by blood vessels, and dissolved. The in-built Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD) delivers a blast of cryogen to cool the skin between pulses.

This makes any potential discomfort a client may feel dissipate. Afterwards, our clients have noticed immediate results.

Clear + Brilliant

The laser uses light energy to exfoliate the top layers of your skin to reveal a smooth, clear complexion. It's one of our most gentle laser therapies for skin pigmentation, and we suggest it to clients who have minimal pigmentation but want to achieve an even skin tone.

For best results, we recommend a series of sessions — two to three, at a minimum. The treatment usually lasts between 30 minutes and one hour. Within 5-7 days, the old skin layers will peel and flake, revealing the bright and fresh skin layers beneath.

Fraxel Dual Laser

Using two wavelengths, this laser safely penetrates the superficial skin layers, stimulating skin cell regeneration and collagen production.

How to prepare for pigmentation treatments

Before you receive treatment for your skin pigmentation, you'll need to do a couple of things first. We'll provide you with a comprehensive document after our initial consultation, but we'll summarise it. For the Cosmelan/Dermamelan mask, and all our laser treatments, you'll need to avoid:

  • Sun exposure and fake tan for one month prior to your treatment date
  • Taking aspirin (it thins the blood and inhibits the healing process)
  • Wearing hairspray, perfume, or aftershave on the day of the treatment — it can increase the risk of feeling a burning sensation

In relation to the laser treatments, two weeks prior to your treatment, you'll need to avoid:

  • Waxing the area
  • Laser treatments
  • Chemical treatments (at home, or in a clinic)
  • Using a depilator on the area to be treated

How to look after your skin post-treatment

To ensure your skin recovers quickly, you'll need to follow an aftercare routine. In the case of the Cosmelan/Dermamelan masks, you'll need to:

  • Avoid sun exposure
  • Moisturise daily with the Hydra Factor K cream
  • Apply SPF 50+ sunscreen every day

Aftercare for our laser therapies is slightly different. You'll need to:

  • Apply a cold compress for 2-3 hours after you get home
  • Avoid aspirin — Paracetamol is okay
  • Don't exercise, or swim in a chlorinated or saltwater swimming pool
  • Avoid hot showers, saunas, and steam rooms

Again, we'll provide you with physical materials, with the aftercare details of your treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many laser treatments will be needed for pigmentation removal?

Depending on how significant the pigmentation is, we recommend a minimum of 2-3 sessions to achieve maximum results. However, some clients book only one session. It's up to you, and your preferences, and what type of skin you have. All of this will be discussed with you in your initial consultation.

How long do I have to wait between laser therapy sessions?

We recommend waiting a period of 4-6 weeks between laser therapy treatments. This allows your skin to recover completely before your next session.

Is laser pigmentation removal permanent?

Laser treatments get rid of the current pigmentation on your face. However, after you've received treatment, you may experience more sun damage or UV exposure, which will result in pigmentation once more.

If you want to reduce or remove pigmentation permanently, you'll need to engage in a rigorous skin care routine, and diligently use sunscreen.

Do your pigmentation treatments hurt?

During laser treatment, our clients tell us the sensation is similar to a rubber band snapping on the skin. If you're very worried about experiencing pain, we can apply a topical numbing cream, as well.

With both our skin peels and laser therapies, you may experience swelling, redness, and tenderness post-treatment. This usually only lasts 2-3 days, before healing. Sometimes, in the case of the Cosmelan/Dermamelan mask, the skin can feel quite itchy while it heals.
