Laser tattoo removal

Get rid of unwanted tattoos in Melbourne

Easy tattoo removal

Parents used to warn their sons and daughters about tattoos, saying they're a lifelong commitment. But they're not — not when you have access to industry-leading laser technology.

At Victorian Dermal Group, we safely and effectively remove tattoos of all shapes and sizes.

How we'll remove your tattoo

You'll need to book an initial consultation with one of our dermal clinicians. During this appointment, we'll look at the size of your tattoo, and it's colour pigmentations. We'll also ask you about your medical history, in case you have any conditions which may interact negatively with our laser therapies.

Then, we'll devise a treatment plan for you. Depending on the size of your tattoo, we'll need to schedule a minimum of six sessions to fully remove your tattoo.

How our laser technology works

We use the RevLite laser. It releases a pulse of light energy into individual skin follicles and shatters the ink lying in the targeted cells. The short pulses feel similar to the snap of an elastic band, and many of our clients say they experience minimal discomfort during the treatment.

The RevLite laser features four wavelengths, meaning it can target a wide scope of colours —including blue, black, red, orange, and purple.

How to prepare for laser tattoo removal

For two weeks prior to treatment, you'll need to avoid:

  • Exposing the site of your tattoo to the sun. You can do so by wrapping a dressing around the tattooed area. Do this two weeks prior to your session.
  • Fake tanning, and tan lotion, for at least two weeks prior to your first session.

If your tattoo has hair, shave the area (as well as a two-centimetre border around it). If advised, apply a topical numbing cream 30-60 minutes prior to the start of your appointment.

How to take care of your skin afterwards

Post-treatment, the treated area may feel like it's been slightly burnt. To minimise blistering, swelling, and bruising, follow these instructions:

  • Keep the treated area bandaged with sterile gauze and protected with a thin layer of antibiotic healing ointment
  • Apply a cool compress for 24 hours post-treatment
  • Don't pick any scabs which may form
  • Avoid high-pressure water when showering
  • Wear sunscreen over the area for three months following your treatment session

What to expect post-treatment

The treated section of skin will temporarily lighten in colour. This will fade with time, and your skin will return to its usual hue.

After your first session, your tattoo will appear faded. It will take several treatments to fully remove a tattoo.

Does laser therapy fully remove a tattoo?

Thanks to the RevLite laser, we can fully remove most tattoos. However, if the colour pigment lies outside the scope of what our laser can detect, a faint trace may remain. We'll let you know when you visit for your initial consultation.

What are the side effects of laser tattoo removal treatments?

In the days following your treatment, you may experience:

  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Blistering
  • Hyperpigmentation/hypopigmentation (discolouration of the skin — this will fade with time)
  • Tenderness and redness

Can you remove just one section of the tattoo?

Yes — we can target specific skin follicles, so it's possible to target and remove one section of the tattoo.

Does laser tattoo removal cause scarring?

Unless the tattoo covers a pre-existing scar, it's highly unlikely laser removal will cause scarring — especially if you follow the aftercare instructions. The RevLite laser uses Q-switched technology, which is non-invasive.

Tattoos aren't permanent — not anymore
