Acne explained

Acne occurs when the pores of your skin become blocked with oil, dead skin, or bacteria. It can be found almost anywhere on your body, but it occurs most frequently on the face, back, neck, chest, and shoulders.

Mild to severe acne can happen to anyone, at any age. The most severe type of acne is referred to as cystic acne. Over-the-counter products don't work, which is why most people with cystic acne seek the help of a professional clinician.

Why me?

Acne can occur for a number of different reasons. Your skin may produce too much oil, or you may work in an industry where your pores are blocked frequently (like in trades industries or hospitality).

If you exercise but don't cleanse your face afterwards, or don't use the proper products for your skin type, you're at risk of developing acne. Other factors can include:

  • A diet high in sugars or carbs
  • Genetics
  • Hormonal changes
  • Certain medications (like contraceptive pills)

Good news

If acne or acne scarring has become a problem for you, there are a range of treatments available.

First, you can manage your acne with corrective skincare. At Victorian Dermal Group, we've researched the most effective topical skin products for acne treatment.

At your initial consultation, we'll detail which skincare solutions will reduce outbreaks and minimise scarring. We also have laser treatments which can reduce or eliminate scarring.

How do I know which treatment will work for me?

We won't know until your visit our clinic. At your initial consultation, we'll ask you to fill out your medical history and skin concerns.

Then, using our Clinical Imaging System, we'll assess the extent of the scarring damage and pigmentation. We'll give you a comprehensive, tailored treatment plan featuring a mix of skin care products and skin solutions.

How do chemical peels work for acne?

Chemical peels remove the top layer of skin, unclogging pores and removing pigmentation caused by acne flares.

Using chemical solutions such as salicylic acid, glycolic acid or retinoic acid, our chemical peels range from mild to moderate. We'll make an informed recommendation based on the severity of your acne flare-ups and scarring.

What skin care products do you use?

We're constantly researching and testing skin care products to ensure we're using and recommending the best skin solutions possible.

Our current skin care range includes chemical peels and skin care treatments by mesoestetic, and Dermaceutic. We also devise treatment plans using the Biretix Spot-Control Program.

Will these methods clear up my acne for good?

No. There is no solution that will rid you of your acne forever, not without resorting to treatments like Roaccutane. But, if performed once a month, our chemical peels can keep your face clear and fresh, and rid you of any acne scarring.

Our process for acne treatment

Step 1

Free skin assessment of your acne

During your first visit to our clinic, we'll ask you to fill out a form outlining your medical history and any lifestyle factors (like diet and exercise, skin care routine). One of our clinicians will sit down with you in a consultation room, and discuss your unique concerns. We'll then use our Clinical Imaging System to take photos of the areas you experience acne.

We'll devise a treatment plan, created specifically for you and your current situation. You'll then have an opportunity to book your first treatment. Alternately, you can go home and think it over before making an appointment.

Step 2

How we'll treat your acne

From laser therapy to microneedling, we have a range of solutions to treat acne. Depending on the severity of your acne, we'll make an informed decision on which solution to offer. You can also choose which you would prefer, and if one treatment doesn't seem to be working for you, we can amend your treatment plan.

Step 3

Preparation before your treatment

You'll need to avoid sun exposure for a month prior to receiving laser treatments. For chemical peels, you'll simply need to stop using your active skin care products for five days prior to the treatment.

Step 4

Aftercare for your acne treatment

For 7-10 days after receiving laser treatment, you can expect redness and swelling for up to 7-10 days after your initial session. After a chemical peel, you may experience redness, followed by scaling which occurs during 3-7 days after treatment. Drink plenty of water, moisturise your skin, and avoid the sun and the gym for 24 hours after your treatment.
