Dull skin

Causes and solutions

What exactly does 'dull skin' mean?

When people say 'dull skin' they are usually referring to skin which is lacking radiance. As skin matures, its ability to renew cells slows down. This causes a build-up of dead cells on the surface, hiding your natural pink complexion.

What causes dull skin?

Often, lifestyle factors contribute to dull skin, such as:

  • Smoke
  • Alcohol
  • Dehydration
  • Stress
  • Lack of sleep
  • Cold weather
  • Poor diets

If you don't exfoliate and moisturise, or if you use the wrong products for your skin type, then your skin can appear lacklustre and dull.

How can I freshen up my dull skin?

You can rejuvenate your skin by investing in high-quality skin care products, and sticking to a regimented routine. You should pair this with other clinically proven treatments, like chemical peels, LED blue light therapy, and laser treatments.

What should I eat to make my skin more radiant?

A healthy and balanced diet, with lots of fruit and vegetables, will help keep your skin glowing after a treatment. Try eating more of:

  • Berries
  • Almonds and sunflower seeds
  • Spinach
  • Avocado
  • Miso
  • Legumes

What skin products do I need to improve my dull skin?

Depending on your skin type, you'll need a few different products. Every person should use the following items in their skin care routine:

  • Cleansers
  • Toners
  • Eye creams
  • Moisturisers
  • Sunscreens

Other things, like spot treatment creams and antioxidant serums, can help restore your skin to a radiant glow.

How do I identify my skin type?

Unless you have the correct training, it can be very hard to work out what type of skin you have. Generally, people fall into one of three skin types.

  • Dry skin
  • Normal/combination skin
  • Oily skin

During your initial assessment with us, we'll use our Clinical Imaging System to look for pigmentation and broken capillaries in your skin. Then we'll create an informed treatment plan, tailored specifically for you.

How quickly can I expect to see results?

The answer to this will depend on which treatment you receive, and how vigilant you are with your skin care regimen. After a Superfacial chemical peel (one of the mildest ones in our range), followed by LED blue light therapy, you can expect to have a glowing face that night and for the next day.

Each laser therapy has different recovery and efficacy times. In your consultation with us, we'll give you care guides, and outline what to expect pre- and post-treatment.

Step 1

Enjoy a free initial skin consultation

When you visit our clinic in Kew, we'll ask you to fill out a questionnaire on your medical history, and lifestyle. Then, we'll sit down with you in a consultation room and discuss your particular concerns when it comes to dull skin. We'll take photos using our Clinical Imaging System, then formulate a unique treatment plan to rejuvenate your skin.

Step 2

How we'll treat your dull skin

Our Superfacial chemical peel is the simplest and quickest way to achieve brighter skin. We follow up the treatment with extractions and blue LED light therapy — leaving your face brighter, with tightened pores.

For longer-lasting effects, we recommend getting a series of RevLite laser or Clear + Brilliant laser treatments. These non-surgical and non-invasive treatments strip away the top layer of skin, leaving you with an even skin tone and gentle glow.

Step 3

Preparation before your session

Depending on which treatment you're receiving, you'll need to make some preparations. If you've booked a chemical peel, you'll need to stop using your usual skin care product for five days prior to your treatment.

For laser treatments, you'll need to avoid sun exposure and fake tanning for one month prior to the date of your booking. We'll apply a topical anesthetic 45 minutes before we begin your treatment.

Step 4

How to care for your skin post-treatment

You can expect some redness and minor swelling after your chemical peels. Some of our peels are stronger than others, so the side effects differ in severity. Your skin will begin to peel and flake. You'll need to drink plenty of water, moisturise your skin, and avoid the gym for a day after your treatment.

Your skin will be red and slightly swollen. You can apply a cool compress, and take painkillers like Nurofen. Avoid aspirin as this makes the bruising worse. Swelling can last for anywhere from 7-10 days.
