Our renowned clinicians

With extensive experience in aesthetic treatments, including chemical peels, depigmentation solutions, anti-wrinkle treatments, and laser hair removal, our clinicians are some of the most experienced aestheticians in Melbourne.

How laser treatments affect hair follicles

Our hair removal lasers deliver pulses of light intense enough to penetrate the superficial layers of the skin and reach the roots of your hair. Within your dermal tissue, the light converts to heat and is absorbed by the dark pigmentation in your hair follicles. The searing prevents the follicles from growing new hair.

Laser hair removal is not entirely painless, but it is not unbearable either. Our clients liken the pulsing laser to a rubber band repeatedly snapping against you. We can apply an anaesthetic cream to the treatment area to minimise your discomfort.

How It Works

The benefits of laser hair removal

Laser hair removal is a long-term solution for removing unwanted hair, making it more convenient than waxing or shaving.

Though it is not a permanent solution, lasering will lessen the overall density of your body hair. This means that when it does grow back, your hair will be more sparse and far less noticeable than it was initially.

Our lasers are also used to remove minor skin blemishes, such as freckles, fine lines and wrinkles, and textured skin caused by skin conditions or environmental factors. Your skin will be left smooth, sleek and blemish-free.

Who It’s For

We use medical-grade Candela laser hair removal technology

Laser light therapy uses, as the name suggests, pulses of light (rather than a continuous beam) to allow for more focused treatment that does not damage untargeted tissue.

To deliver the best possible hair removal treatment, we’ve assessed several lasers and selected the Candela Gentle Pro laser. Gentle Pro lasers have been the industry standard for two decades and enable us to reduce the number of hair follicles on your body in as little as three laser hair removal sessions.

The Gentle Pro laser uses a Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD). This device sprays a cooling burst of cryogen onto the treatment area between light pulses, minimising your discomfort and helping your skin tissue heal.

The Technology

Preparing for laser hair removal

  • Arrive at your appointment with product-free skin. Please avoid makeup, deodorants and sunscreen.
  • Twenty-four hours before your appointment, we'd like you to shave the area you will receive laser treatment on.
  • For at least 48 hours before your appointment, avoid alcohol and blood-thinning medications.
  • Avoid waxing or plucking the treatment area for six weeks before your appointment.
  • Avoid fake tanning, either using chemicals or UV beds.
Preparation

Laser hair removal aftercare

After your laser hair removal, it is natural for your skin to appear lighter and take several hours to return to its normal colour. You'll need to avoid direct sun exposure, and do not bleach, pluck or wax for four to six weeks afterwards. For extra measure, wear SPF sun cream.

You may experience minor itching, redness, or swelling in the treatment area. This will subside within a few days. You will undergo a 'shedding' stage, where the hair will fall out. Do not pluck, tweeze, or wax — this must happen naturally for perfect hair-free skin.

Comprehensive laser hair removal is only one of the many skin treatments our team is qualified to conduct. We can help you combine multiple treatments into your personalised plan to ensure you get the best results from them all.

How laser hair removal is affected by hair and skin colour

Because the lasers target the pigmentation at the root of your hair follicles, laser removal treatment is not equally effective across all skin and hair types. At your consultation, we’ll talk through your options.

Laser hair removal for blonde hair

Blonde, sandy, grey and white hair has little to no dark pigmentation. This makes it hard for the laser's heat to target the follicles. This can become more of a problem if you also have very light skin. However, our precise hair removal lasers may still remain effective in removing your lighter hair.

Laser hair removal for red hair

Laser hair removal treatments can work for red hair, but the effectiveness of the treatment depends on your shade of ginger. The darker the shade of red, the more effective the treatment. Still, if you’re a strawberry blonde, we may still be able to help. Book your consultation with our aestheticians.

Laser hair removal for dark hair and skin

Laser hair removal works because the heat of the lasers is absorbed by the dark pigmentation in the hair follicles. But with dark skin tones, the heat is absorbed by the dermal tissue rather than the hair. But all is not lost — book a consultation so we can estimate how effective our laser treatment will be for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is laser hair removal safe?

Yes, especially when conducted by medical professionals. Victorian Dermal Group’s clinicians are licensed dermal consultants and highly experienced in using market-leading laser technology.

How much does laser hair removal cost?

The cost of your laser hair removal will depend on the scope of the treatment. We’ll have to factor in the total area of your body you want to be treated as well as how many treatment cycles you’ll need to achieve the results you’re after.

We can only give you a proper quote after your consultation, so give us a call today.

How many treatments do I need?

It depends on your skin type, but most of our clients receive 4-6 hair removal treatments spread out between 4-6 week intervals. We can give you a more detailed plan when you come in for your initial assessment.

Can I go to work straight after being treated?

Yes! Your treatment shouldn't affect your ability to work. But bear in mind, if you've received treatment on a visible part of your body, your skin will appear red for a few days.

How does the laser work?

Laser hair removal works by using laser light and electric pulses to heat the hair follicle and destroy its roots without damaging the surrounding tissue or skin. The laser prevents the treated hair follicle from producing hair in the future.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

While the severity of the pain depends on your tolerance for it, our technology uses a Dynamic Cooling Device. This means, in between laser pulses, the skin is cooled down — dramatically reducing the amount of pain you may feel.

Different body parts have different sensitivities. Often, our clients say the treatment feels like a rubber band snapping on the skin, so more sensitive treatment areas like facial hair may sting more than on the arms or legs.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

In short, no. Laser hair removal procedures do not produce a permanent hair-free result, and any clinic that says they do is lying to you.

However, unlike most other hair removal methods, laser hair removal reduces the density of the hair. Hair will still go back, albeit lighter and with less coverage. A better way to describe the results is 'permanent hair reduction'. Depending on your skin and hair type, you will need to continue treatments every year.

How long does laser hair removal last?

Depending on your hair and skin type, a single laser hair procedure will last between 1 and 2 years.

You may need additional sessions in between to maintain the effectiveness of your hair removal.

How long does laser hair removal treatment take?

Typical laser hair removal treatments will take between 1 and 2 hours. Following this, hair will take between 10 and 14 days to fall out.

Can you get laser hair removal while pregnant?

Laser hair removal is a very safe procedure. However, as no long-term studies have been completed on the impacts of laser hair removal on pregnant women, we would advise playing it safe and waiting until after your due date. Always ask your doctor before undertaking any beauty treatment while pregnant.
