Which is the right option skin peel for ageing skin?

Anti ageing has become a buzz word in the skincare industry. But what does it really mean? And why should we be so concerned with ageing skin? Contrary to popular belief, it's not ageing which can make our skin look dull and create fine lines and wrinkles — it's what ageing does to collagen production.

As our bodies age, we start to produce less collagen. This, combined with years of sun exposure and air pollution, can cause your skin to lose its elasticity and vibrancy. But there are some non-invasive dermal therapies, like skin peels, which can instantly restore vitality to your appearance.

At Victorian Dermal Group, we offer a range of anti ageing skin peels and at-home treatments to rectify collagen loss. Book a consultation with our qualified and experienced clinicians, and we'll form a treatment plan tailored to your lifestyle and skin condition.

Best chemical peels at home

Dermamelan and cosmelan skin peels

While both peels should be applied at a professional skin clinic, you can spend the duration of the application time at home. You can choose between two chemical skin peels. The cosmelan skin peel treatment is a cosmetic strength solution, while the dermamelan peel is a medical-grade strength.

What do they do?

Both treatments remove melanin skin spots, while increasing your skin's radiance and creating a more even skin tone. It temporarily halts the process of melanin production, allowing your skin time to regenerate. Once the treatment has ended, however, your skin will begin to create new melanin, so you'll need to be vigilant about using SPF sunscreen, and avoiding high exposure to UV rays.

How is the treatment administered?

The treatment is administered in two phases.

First, a dermal clinician will prepare your skin, then apply the mask. Then, you'll need to return home and leave the mask on between 8 and 12 hours. Once the time is up, you can wash the mask off with soap and water.

Your dermal clinician will instruct you on how to take care of your skin once you've removed the mask. Usually, you'll need to take precautions such as:

  • Avoiding spas and saunas
  • Wearing SPF sunscreen daily
  • Avoiding sun exposure
  • Avoiding gyms or workout regimes which generate excessive sweat

About a week after you've taken the mask off, your skin may begin to peel or flake. This is natural — dead skin cells are making way for beautiful pigment-free layer beneath.

Superfacial Enzyme Peel

Made of natural enzymes, this skin peel treats imperfections and blemishes, while brightening dull skin. It's a mild skin peel, with no downtime required. It tightens the skin, flattening and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It's the perfect option for upcoming events and celebrations — or for days where you just want to look as good as you feel.

How is the treatment administered?

You'll need to consult with a dermal clinician to ensure this treatment is the right solution for your skin type and lifestyle. After a consultation, your clinician will cleanse your skin, and apply the peel. Afterwards, you'll notice an immediate change in your appearance.

You'll need to apply more moisturiser than usual, and wear SPF sunscreen, but otherwise — you'll be fresh-faced and ready for your event.

TCA peel

Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) exfoliates the skin at a dermal level. It is available in a range of strengths, to treat different skin conditions and concerns. It's effectively used to minimise the signs of ageing on skin, and to stimulate collagen production.

How is the treatment administered?

First, you'll need to consult a qualified dermal clinic. There, a clinician will assess your skin type and condition, and suggest a strength which suits you best.

Then, they'll prepare your skin and apply the peel. You'll need to lay with the peel on for around 30 minutes to ensure maximum efficacy.

Then, the peel is easily washed off, and you're ready to go home. You'll need to follow any aftercare instructions your clinician gives you, and make sure you protect your skin from UV exposure.

But the best solution depends entirely on your skin type, sensitivities, lifestyle factors, and medications you may be taking.
