Laser resurfacing to treat wrinkles

As we age, our skin loses elasticity. Collagen production slows down, and other lifestyle factors, like smoking, sun exposure, and pollution can increase the occurrence of wrinkles. While some people love their crow's feet and smile lines, others are less happy with their appearance.

Luckily, there are ways to minimise or eliminate skin wrinkles. With laser resurfacing and the right skincare regime, you can keep your face vibrant and fresh.

At Victorian Dermal Group, we use industry leading laser resurfacing technology to treat the effects of ageing. If you'd like to find out more, book a consultation with our expert team.

What is laser resurfacing?

Laser resurfacing is a facial rejuvenation treatment used by dermal clinicians to improve the skin's appearance. The laser technology usually utilised comes in two kinds:

  • Ablative: A wounding laser, which removes the outer layer of skin, while heating the underlying skin. This stimulates new collagen growth, and as the skin heals, the new layer will appear smooth and tight.
  • Nonablative laser: A laser which doesn't pierce the skin. It's a less invasive laser technology, and requires less downtime than ablative laser resurfacing.

Is laser resurfacing effective at getting rid of wrinkles?

Yes, laser resurfacing treatments have an instant effect on your skin. Within days after treatment, you'll notice your skin feels tighter and more radiant. Depending on the severity of the wrinkles, you may need more than one session to see long-lasting effects.

Are there any side effects?

The side effects of both ablative and nonablative lasers are minimal. As with most wrinkle treatments, there may be some slight swelling, itchiness, and redness post-treatment. But with the right skincare routine, and aftercare advice, your skin will be glowing in no time.

Can anyone get laser resurfacing for antiageing?

While common and minimally invasive, this skin treatment isn't recommended for all skin types. If you have sensitive skin, or any other skin conditions, then your dermal clinician may recommend an alternative wrinkle treatment — like chemical peels, injectables, or at-home products.

When should I consider getting laser resurfacing?

If you are unhappy with the appearance of fine lines or wrinkles on your face, then laser resurfacing may be a good treatment option. When you consult with a dermal clinician, you can discuss your skin concerns, and they'll assess your medical history and lifestyle to ensure you are a good candidate for the treatment.

What to expect before and after receiving laser resurfacing to treat antiageing

To prepare for your treatment, you'll need to:

  • Minimise sun exposure for up to two months prior to treatment
  • Reduce or stop smoking for at least two weeks before treatment
  • Avoid certain medications

Post-treatment, you'll need to take care of your skin by:

  • Applying a cold compress to the treated area
  • Avoiding hot showers and saunas
  • Wearing high SPF sun cream every day

What to expect during treatment?

m-pen skin needling

The m-pen creates a series of tiny puncture wounds on the surface of your skin, which triggers collagen production. It's relatively pain-free, and has minimal side effects but you may experience a slight swelling of the skin post-treatment.

Nonablative lasers

Nonablative lasers don't pierce the skin, so there is less downtime needed than the ablative lasers listed above. However, they are less effective, and require more treatment sessions to get the desired effect. Most dermal clinics will use lasers like:

  • Fraxel Dual
  • Clear + Brilliant
  • GentleMax Pro
  • Vbeam Prima
  • RevLite

All these lasers are highly developed, and used by the best experts in the industry.

Why choose Victorian Dermal Group?

At Victorian Dermal Group, we believe in assessing each individual client, and recommending the treatment best suited to their skin type and lifestyle factors. That's why all our clients have an initial consultation before any treatments. And your consultation fee is redeemable on the cost of your treatment.

During the consultation, we'll ask you to fill out a form regarding your medical history and lifestyle, and then one of our dermal clinicians will chat to you about your skin concerns. We'll take images of your skin using medical-grade technology.

We'll then give you a detailed treatment plan, offering solutions to your skin concerns including products to use at home. We never offer same-day treatments — we advise all our clients to think through their options before making a commitment.
