Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment exposes the skin to multiple wavelengths of light in short pulses of energy. It is an alternative to laser treatments, which expose the skin to focused beams of a single wavelength.
IPL photofacials are ideal for treating a large surface area in a single session. By spreading energy across multiple wavelengths of light, IPL treatments can be far less abrasive on your skin than laser alternatives. That doesn’t make them any less effective when used correctly, however, though it does mean that IPL photofacials require far less downtime.
Prior to your treatment session, our doctors will provide you with detailed written preparation instructions to ensure you get the best possible results and that your skin recovers as quickly as possible.
The critical preparation instructions will include:
Our efficiency is a mark of our expertise. Your IPL rejuvenation treatment session will run for approximately an hour, depending on the details of your treatment plan. Here’s how the day will run.
While your skin will be tender immediately after your treatment, you should be well enough to return to work or to any other engagements you have scheduled on the day of your treatment.
Your IPL photofacial recovery time will run for approximately a week, more or less depending on the details of your treatment.
Your doctor will give you detailed aftercare instructions that’ll tell you precisely what to do after your IPL photofacial to help your tender skin heal. These instructions will include:
Remember that flaking skin is natural. These are simply the dead dull skin cells that the IPL treatment has erased, and they will fall away to reveal your fresh, even-toned, glowing skin beneath.
IPL photofacials and chemical peels have several similarities. Both are used to clear away the textured and ruddy superficial layers of your skin to reveal the clear skin beneath. To choose between them, you must consider your skin type and which skin conditions you’re looking to treat.
IPL treatment is more effective at treating rosacea and melasma. Light therapy also requires significantly lower recovery time. However, chemical peels come in mild, medium or deep-penetration formulas and can be more effective at erasing deep wrinkles and blemishes.
Microneedling treatment, as the name suggests, uses a rapidly oscillating needle to create minute punctures across the skin. The piercing stimulates collagen production, which helps to firm and revitalise the skin. In fact, both microneedling and IPL photofacials promote collagen.
The difference between the two is that microneedling is more effective at targeting specific areas of textured skin, such as scars, wrinkles, and facial features with large pores. IPL photofacials are more effective at improving uneven complexions caused by hyperpigmentation conditions.
It’s our responsibility to plan the path to reach your aesthetic goals. That path may include chemical peels, microneedling, injectable fillers, laser treatments, ultrasound therapy or even some combination. Rest assured that whatever we settle on, we’ll always prioritise your comfort and safety.
We’re proud to have formed long-term relationships with our clients, some of whom regularly travel interstate to work with the doctors at our Melbourne clinic. Doctor Master is patient, professional and not pushy. I love dealing with him. His treatments have taken years off my face. The staff make you feel comfortable, and are supportive. And the prices have always been consistent and reasonable.
My skin has never been better. Very professional and amazing clinic. Products have all worked perfectly with my skin. It’s taken me years to find a clinic that I trust — it's such an amazing feeling. I couldn’t recommend this clinic more highly!
I'm super happy with Dr Master and his work on treating my forehead wrinkles. Two weeks after, and my face looks fresh but natural — which is the look I was after. The ladies at the clinic were also very professional.
I was recommended by a friend to see Dr Master to fix botched fillers in my cheeks and lips from a previous Doctor. Dr Master actually spent the time with me and talked through the whole process of how to rectify my botched face.
You’ll hear plenty from our dermatologists at your consultation. For now, have a read of what our clients have to say about the results we deliver.
As a makeup artist, Suzy knows clear skin is the best foundation to start with. She loves our Clear + Brilliant laser treatment because it tightens pores and stimulates collagen, promoting the fresh-faced look she loves so much. And the reason she loves it so much? It's gentle, and suitable for many different skin types.
Despite her beautiful voice, singer Adelaide Clark has her own skin concerns. She's been carving out the time in her schedule to book treatments for a little over six months. We worked with Adelaide to formulate a tailored plan to target her skin concerns, and prevent premature ageing.
Model Lissy Jaye has a busy schedule. Between modelling shoots, self care, and socialising with friends, getting rid of unwanted hair can be a time-sucking hassle. Her life is now that much easier, after receiving laser hair removal treatments at clinic in Kew.
Yes, you can apply makeup to your skin immediately after treatment.
We do recommend that you also use a potent skin moisturiser and SPF 50+ sunscreen.
Under our meticulous medical supervision, IPL photofacials can be effective when used on naturally dark skin. However, the darker your skin tone, the less effective the treatment will be. The reason for this is that the heat generated by the light pulses is absorbed by melanin, which is then agitated and broken up. That’s how the treatment targets skin blemishes — the greater the contrast between the blemish and the surrounding skin, the more accurate the treatment.
In darker skin, where there is little contrast between the natural skin tone and the blemish or scar, the light’s energy will be absorbed by all tissue and can cause discolouration.
At your consultation, your doctor will discern when IPL photofacials are the best treatment for you or if one of our other treatments might offer better results.
IPL treatments use light energy to generate heat, so you will feel small heat pulses. The treatment does not burn, and our clients describe the sensation as being like having a small rubber band snapping against your skin.
Yes, IPL photofacials double as a laser hair removal treatment, and are just as effective at removing unwanted hair as they are at removing blemishes.
We do not perform IPL photofacials on pregnant clients. There isn’t enough available data for us to understand the effects of the treatment on parent and child. We feel that it is best not to risk it.
That depends on your goals and the unique qualities of your skin. On average, our treatment plans recommend 2-6 sessions to achieve the best results.
If your treatment plan recommends multiple sessions, they will be spaced 4-6 weeks apart.
Yes, they do. The collagen that IPL rejuvenations promote is the protein that keeps your skin tissue firm and plump, so you will notice a marked improvement in the tightness and quality of your skin after treatment.
